Thursday Doors

THREE DOORS FOR THURSDAY

No 8 – In the mouth of a lion is my most favourite door in the whole town. I love that beautiful wood and highly polished brass sitting under that strong face resting in the mouth of what appears to be a lion. I have posted this picture before but this door is special enough to merit more than one viewing.

This door is of our little café Cercle La Corcorde which closed for the final time last week and is now all shuttered up awaiting her fate. She was the only bar in the village but had been in decline for the last few years with fewer and fewer people inclined to frequent its dark and dingy interior.. I believe she is owned by the Municipaltie who dont seem to care that we are now left without a local watering hole. I fear that the pace of change hereabouts wont see her opening Under new and more vibrant management any time soon. I will miss walking through those little doors into the dark strange smelling room, more like an old widows front room than a place of public resort. At least the beer was always cold and the chatter of the old men playing cards somehow comforting.

My third and newest discovery is this fabulous brick surrounded door sitting under what appears to be old glass fixings for early electrical cabling. The little buiding is overgrown with ivy and sits alongside a disused lock on the original 19th century canal. More investigation will be required to discover her origins. I like this door enormously.

  1. I love all of these, Dan. They’re all beautiful in their own way. I hope another place opens up, whether in this space or elsewhere. It’s a shame to lose one.

  2. Thanks for the info Sherry – as l told Dan this link from 9 years ago was posted in error and currently use a Lenovo laptop and Samsung galaxy tablet. But I’m always on the lookout for a deal ☺

  3. Bonjour Dan – The post you are referencing was one of my early Thursday Doors from nine years ago which l linked in error – it’s for that reason l posted another comment with this weeks correct link. Sadly l have to report that the Concorde Cafe still remains closed and unloved but the Mayor is promising a renaissance later this year. I won’t be holding my breath ☺

I’ve got through a few laptops and tablets since 2014 – currently using a Lenovo and a Galaxy tab.

  4. I love these doors, but I am saddened by the loss of a tavern/pub, especially the last of the locals. I hope they find a way to cut through what sounds like the traditional red tape.

I don’t have a recommendation, but I am working on a Microsoft Surface. It’s not much bigger than an iPad, but it runs Windows 10/11 and it does a nice job of running Lightroom and Photoshop. It can support an external monitor, but I don’t have room for one on my small desk.

  5. Love the doors Dan. I recommend an HP Alienware PC if you like power. A simple machine would be an all-in-one by a top manufacturer. I recommend all-in-ones to all my clients.

  6. Hi

Thanks for the comments. The French bureaucrat is a bizarre and entrenched character better suited to Wonderland than any logical structured problem solving environment. An it can take years and years of pointless discussion and letter writing to come to the conclusion that a decision cannot be made at this time.

  7. Wow~! Great shots; love the colours too.
For the closed watering hole—someone must be paying taxes on the property? If that is the municipality can’t the taxpayers demand satisfaction, rather than increased taxes on diminishing ‘assets’? Surely it would be win/win all round if flipped off at a giveaway price to some private enterprise?

Now to explore, I like this site so far …

  8. Wow! Great stuff. I love how your photographs make me want to learn more about them and the stories they tell. I particularly love the red cow in the black and white world. Thanks for stopping by my blog so I could discover yours.

  9. I was asked by someone who has more of a travel blog, but with an interest in gardening so that’s OK. She has some good photographs of places she has visited including gardens. If you get stuck let me know – would be happy to have a couple of buddies and you do post the occasional rose. If you don’t want a gardening blog advertised on your home page we could still support each other by email? Be careful with an ipad – the quality of the images is amazing, but you can’t get the full version of Lightroom for example. You do get iPhoto with it so can do basic editing. Don’t know if a windows tablet would have the same limitations. Don’t think I would get on well editing with a small screen. Other assignments have just moved too quickly for me. I will try to do some stuff in my own time and maybe join the class again next time. The contact with other bloggers though has been amazing. Can I have your email address for sending header photos – mine is myaberdeengarden@gmail.com

  10. Bonjour Annette

I’ve got a creaky old HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with a 17″ screen. Its due for the knackers yard but l will stick with it as long as possible. My daughter tells me that l should get an ipad next time but l rely too heavily on Microsoft ‘paint’ software to go the apple route. But a tablet with Window 8 may be the way forward – l dont know.

How are you getting on with these assignments. Have you found another greenfingered blogger to ‘buddy’ up with yet?. I haven’t seen any activity on the ‘Commons’ from other photographers so l’m going to have to ask. We’ll se what happens.

    Regards

    Dan

  13. You can subscribe to groups of blogs by following a tag.
    Click into Reader.
Look on the right sidebar. Mine shows “Blogs I follow” and below that is a box that says “tags”
In the Tags box on the right is the word “explore” If you click that it takes you to the Tags list
Read the tags list until you local photography (or what ever group you want to follow) and click that tag
A list of blogs related to that tag should come up.
At the top by the tag’s/category’s name there is a follow button. Click that button.
Now that category/Tag group should show in that Tag box you saw previously underneath the Readers’ Blogs I follow box. (close reader and reopen it. See if it’s there under Tags)
Then you can click that tag and instantly see all the blogs posting there.
    That should work.
Following Tag groups is a great way to meet bloggers, keep up with new stuff and learn tricks from them
    (Hope this isn’t too confusing)

  14. Wow that would be great – thanks. I will see if I have anything from last year, otherwise it will be a few weeks yet before the poppies are out. I am hoping to get Lightroom myself soon, but don’t have room on my rather old Mac. Wondering whether to get a PC laptop for messing with photographs but not sure any of the monitors are as good. What do you use?

  15. Humans have an odd fondness for doors – and what they mean/suggest. Good pix are never boring (There’s someone else who features doors, will tty to remember their blog…you are following the photo blog group?)

  16. Yes, you guessed, I love poppies! Thanks for the comments about my blog – I hate that wasted space too though. I liked the featured posts and the fact that the theme was responsive so no tweaking for mobiles and tablets. I will look into your theme though – your photos are displayed so well. Might have to get a top banner done though – design is not my strong point – though I suppose I could just use a photograph. The poppies will be out soon. . .

  17. Bonjour Annette

From your Gravatar l assume you are a lover of the poppy – as well as all of those other magnificent blooms in your lovely garden. Thank you for your feed back l really appreciate it. I did try the theme you use but couldn’t get my head round the wasted space on the right. If l see space l want to fill it with words or colour. Your blog is fabulous and the photography really brings the whole thing to life. Why not give the able theme a little try – if you go to Dashboard-appearance-themes it allows you to preview your blog using a theme without activating it. Unlike the Change Themes Under MY BLOGS which does not.

  18. Hi Phil

I have been tempted to post many more doors but that could get a bit boring for everyone – so perhaps each Thursday I’ll do the best 2/3 of the week and see what happens.

  20. Is this a business opportunity for someone wanting to relocate? Sounds like it might need a load of money throwing at it though.
By the way I love your poppy header and your list of previous posts – I need to sort out my archives; I am falling very behind with the 201 course.

  21. I often get that happening in my reader with several blogs getting repeated a few times. I don’t think it is the problem of the individual blog; it usually sorts itself out eventually.

  24. Doors and doorways always make good subject…usually they hold still and everyone can think of a story to go with them. The top pix is simply fascinating – something so beautiful is just standing around waiting to be noticed. Hope a place opens up there soon for you
